CHAPTER 15
Aiden
Mab brushed past them as Aiden followed Mare into the throne room. Her face glowed as she all but ran towards Tatianaâs room. The familiar pang of homesickness struck at Aidenâs heart; but his mother and his home were gone.
Oberonâs eyes narrowed as they approached, and though he leaned back in his throne, his body was tense. Aiden couldnât help but suppress the flare of rage in his chest as he gazed upon the kingâs adorned antlers. A vain waste of magic, his magic, that he could be using in the war.
Aiden gave Oberon a curt bow. Unlike Mab, Oberon didnât require the dramatic display of loyaltyâhe knew Aiden had no choice.
âI have missions for the two of you, and they need to be executed quickly. Youâll need to leave now.â Oberon sat up and scrutinized Mare and Aiden. Mare cast her eyes away from him, and a muscle flexed in Oberonâs jaw. âSummer has finally fought back in the Sunset Valley. It seems the lives of their people were less important than territoryâitâs good to know.â
âWe can go and organize the troops,â Aiden said, but Oberon shook his head.
âTheyâll be fine for the time being. What I need you to do is hunt down a way to destroy Summer for good.â
Aidenâs brow creased, and he opened his mouth to reply but shut it again. How was he supposed to do that? If Summer had the Crown like Mare had said, there was little else he could do than confront the prince head on. And unless their Majesties had done something to him, Aiden feared he might not survive the encounter.
âI see your confusion, but worry not. I donât expect you to think.â Oberonâs lips curled into a cruel smile. âBoy, you will return to the Nightmare Plains and have the witch brew me a curse. One that will render Summer useless.â
A sick feeling ran through Aidenâs stomach. The idea of returning to the Plains without Mare made his skin itch. How was he supposed to get past the nightmares and convince her mother to brew him something on his own? But he didnât voice his concerns aloud. From the look on Oberonâs face, their Majesties would expect him to come up with the payment on his own.
âAnd you, Mare,â Oberon said with a sly grin. âYou will spy on Elessea. Find me their weaknesses and the best place to release the curse. It, of course, wonât be your first time there.â
Mare swallowed hard and nodded. She looked as though she were going to throw up...
âGo.â
Aiden took a step towards the door, but Oberon ordered him to stop. Body going rigid, Aiden inwardly cursed the life debt that gave their Majesties complete control over him.
âThe wards are downâleave right now.â
Mare shot a worried glance at Aiden as shadows enclosed around her body. He bit his lip and wended. Oberon might not show it, but he was likely worried about Summer. They had the Crown, and their Majesties merely had Mare and him.
